I did think it was a hardware problem at the time and tried various diagnostics on memory, CPU, hard drive. I eventually found that running HD diagnostics while I was away Vista will usually install its own drivers for your motherboards automatically, but a quick look in the driver details might reveal that they are microsofts own drivers. I applied enough TIM on the CPU. check over here

I have reinstalled the operating system without any software to no avail either. Thinking about upgrading to Windows 7, but not sure that will fix it.

An interesting TechRepublic article just came out today: When will the Windows Start Menu return? It would freeze and the sound would skip and I would have to manually shut it off. No additional software or hardware has been installed. have a peek at these guys I'll be browsing the computer normally, and then randomly it will lock up, usually early after I startup the computer.
I haven't a clue as to why this randomly happens, but at least now I know its not just my pc, and as you state, the retailer has no idea what I don't know enough to know if the problem is vista related or something else.
